How to live green all day every day

For some, leading an environmentally friendly life comes naturally. If our family, living arrangements and jobs allow, we can easily adapt to a lifestyle that produces less waste, uses less energy, and helps to keep the planet as green as possible. Unfortunately, many of us struggle to live in an eco-friendly manner, simply because our situations won’t allow it.

While it may be easy to limit energy use at home, our carbon footprints can continue to grow with the amount of travel we have to do for work. You might also want to eat organic, local produce, but that can be difficult for mums and dads with fussy children. It’s also harder for city dwellers to ‘live green’ compared to country folk, as they don’t have the space to grow their own food or install solar panels.

Fortunately, we have some tips that will boost your eco-friendliness all through the day. From the moment you wake up until it’s time to go to bed, here’s our advice for helping you to live green around the clock.

In the morning…

Take a super short shower to wake yourself up. You can be totally clean and refreshed within five minutes, and you’ll save a lot of water!

Brew coffee and tea that’s grown using sustainable standards. If you drink on the go, take a reusable travel cup.

Make yourself a lunch box before you head off to work. This will save you money and also cut back on packaging!

Turn off the lights and electrical appliances before leaving the house.

At work…

Car share with colleagues or people that work close by. If public transport is available, choose this. Even better, walk or cycle if possible!

Stick to the speed limit – driving just 10mph over can cost you a substantial amount more in fuel.

Print on both sides of the paper.

Change your computer settings to ‘Sleep’ when you’re away from your desk for an extended amount of time.

Drink from a reusable water bottle rather than buying a fresh one every day.

Make sure all electrical equipment is unplugged before leaving work – offices are the worst culprits for leaving items on stand-by!

Heading home…

Take a reusable bag to the shops.

Only buy items that are on your list. This will help to cut back on food waste.

Cook from scratch, using local ingredients where possible. If your food can be cooked using the microwave, choose this over the oven – it uses much less energy.

Stack up your dishwasher rather than washing by hand, and always run it full.

If you want to wash before bed, choose a shower over a bath (maybe save that for the weekend – you’ll use much less water!)

Try to stick to one piece of electrical equipment at a time – there’s no need to watch TV, play on the computer and charge your phone at the same time!

Time to sleep…

Maintain a temperature of around 19 degrees Celsius, unless it’s bed time, where a temperature of 16-17 will be more comfortable. Lowering down your thermostat by one or two degrees can save a huge amount on energy bills!

Turn of all electrical equipment at the mains.

Turn the tap off while you’re brushing your teeth.

With our advice, you start to make the little changes that contribute massively to the sustainability of our planet. Remember, you can also take steps towards a more energy efficient home by installing high quality, functional wooden blinds, which have the distinct ability to retain heat, welcome in natural light and provide air circulation… all while looking super stylish!
